What Digital Business Technology Should You Be Using In 2022?

 

If you are a small business owner or entrepreneur, you need to be utilizing certain digital technologies in order to be successful in your online business adventures and endeavors.

The current online business environment is a very competitive, dog-eat-dog battlefield.  And if you go in thinking you are going to be successful without using the latest digital technology you are going to be in for a rude awakening.

In this article I am going to list, at a minimum, the technology I think you should be employing in 2022 and beyond to be successful online.

The Most Important Digital Technology Element

First and foremost, you need a modern and contemporary website that works as hard as you do.  Not only does your website need to look good but it also needs to function to perfection.  It needs to be responsive in that the site should render correctly on all devices (i.e. desktop, laptop, tablet and phone).

If you current website looks like it was built in the 90’s you are in trouble.  Websites have a life expectancy of about 3 to 4 years.  Sites that are older than that either need to be replaced or redesigned to keep pace with technological changes in web design and development.  Your website is the core of your online marketing efforts so it should be your primary technological focus over everything else.

Email Is Not Dead!

The next digital technology you need to be concerned with is your email marketing and management setup.  Don’t believe all the misinformation that email is dead as a communication medium. Email is far from dead. In fact, companies make more money off their email lists than any other sales and marketing channel.

People still read their email especially if you send them something they are interested in and desire whether that be a product or service.  From a profit standpoint, every $1 you spend on email marketing you can expect an average return of $42 which is a tremendous ROI.  Email is still the primary customer acquisition and customer retention channel for small and midsize businesses.  However, in order for your company to make real money with email you need to setup a robust email infrastructure to include autoresponders and email drip systems.

Hit Them Where They Live

Next, since most people live on their phones, you need a way to consistently reach them.  You can do this by using SMS/Text messaging.  Similar to the way email works, SMS/Texting sends messages to prospects and customers notifying them of ongoing activities in your business such as updates, sales events, coupons, discounts, deals, etc.  However, SMS/Texting has one big advantage over email in that 98% of people who receive a text message open it while email open rates are oftentimes less than 25%.

Here are some stats about SMS/Text messaging:

75% of consumers are comfortable receiving SMS messages from brands as long as they opt-in to messaging.

64% of consumers think businesses should contact them via text messages more often.

75% of consumers want to receive texts with special offers (I.e. discounts, coupons, etc.)

Start Crushing It With Video In 2022

The last technology I am going to talk about today is video marketing.  If you don’t use video in 2022 and beyond then you are going to be behind the power curve.  Video is becoming the dominant marketing medium because it can reach so many more people than other channels especially if you couple it with social media and email marketing.   People love to watch video as evidenced by the exponential growth of YouTube (2 billion users) and TikTok (1 billion users) platforms.  According to LearnHub, video content is 1200% more successful than other forms of online content such as text and images.
